Armstrong goes back-to-back with GT New Zealand Championship – William Exton wins GT4 title
Rick Armstrong has defended his title winning the Summerset GT New Zealand Championship for the second consecutive year, beating Mercedes AMG GT2 driver Joel Giddy to the title by a narrow margin – just 13.5 points between the two drivers by the end of racing yesterday at Hampton Downs.
William Exton sealed the GT4 title on Saturday with two races to spare.
Armstrong also won the Porsche Endurance Trophy New Zealand title as well.
In a hard fought battle throughout the five round, 15 race season, and the lead changing multiple times, Armstrong claimed the top spot on the points table from Giddy with Luke Manson third.
Marco Giltrap took out the Junior Pro title.
The final GT4 Championship standings saw the Mercedes AMG of James Sax finish second, with the Toyota Supra GT4 EVO of Allan Sargeant third.
Sargeant also picking up the GT4 Masters Trophy for the season.
With three races held over the weekend at Hampton Downs, Giltrap took line honours in the first 30-minute race of the weekend with Exton winning in GT4.
The second 30-minute race yesterday morning saw Armstrong take the win, with the Mercedes AMG of James Sax winning in GT4.
The final-hour feature race of the weekend saw Giltrap take another win, with Giddy second on the road, with Armstrong finishing behind in 5th, but gathering enough points to finish ahead of Giddy in the final championship standings.
James Sax picked up the win in GT4 in the one-hour feature – helping him clinch second place in the championship, just 20.5 points ahead of Allan Sargeant who finished third for the season.
